What does the name Seat mean?

Seat, in its own spelling in capital letters SEAT, was founded in 1950 as "Sociedad Española de Automóviles de Turismo" - in German "Spanische Gesellschaft für Personenwagen". The initials of the Spanish company name form the abbreviation SEAT.

The beginning of Seat

Seat was founded on the initiative of the state industrial umbrella organisation of the Franco regime. The aim was to provide the largely non-mobile population with affordable and reliable small cars, and the first car, the Seat 1400, rolled off the production line at the main plant in Barcelona as early as 1953. SEAT's founding history and intentions are therefore strongly reminiscent of VW in Germany, and the Seat 600, which was produced from 1957, was the Spanish equivalent of the VW Beetle.

The development of Seat until today

In the 1960s, Seat was the undisputed market leader for cars in Spain, partly due to the high import duties imposed by the Franco government - for many years, the official Spanish taxis consisted of the Seat 1500 model. In the 1970s, the construction of coupés, exports to other European countries and vehicle construction licensed by Fiat began, and further Seat plants were built.
1982 was an important year for Seat: the co-operation with VW began and the second main plant - in addition to Barcelona - was founded in the small Catalan town of Martorell. Seat now exported successfully throughout Europe and began to build compact and mid-range cars in addition to small cars. VW gradually took over Seat, and today the Catalan-Catalan company is part of the Wolfsburg-based group. Seat has been a holding company since 2018, now also focussing on environmentally friendly cars and SUVs.
