Seat, spelled SEAT in its own capital letters, was founded in 1950 as "Sociedad Española de Automóviles de Turismo" - in German "Spanische Gesellschaft für Personenwagen". The initials of the Spanish company name result in the abbreviation SEAT.
The beginning of Seat
Seat was founded on the initiative of the state-owned industrial umbrella company of the Franco regime. The aim was to provide the largely non-mobile population with inexpensive and reliable small cars, and as early as 1953 the first car rolled off the production line in the main plant in Barcelona, the Seat 1400. Thus the founding history and intentions of SEAT are strongly reminiscent of VW in Germany, and the Seat 600, which was produced from 1957 onwards, also represents the Spanish counterpart to the VW Beetle.
The development of Seat until today
The number of employees rose sharply, in the 60s Seat was, also due to the high import duties of the Franco government, thus the undisputed market leader for cars in Spain - so for many years the official Spanish cabs consisted of the Seat 1500 model. In the 70s began the construction of coupes, exports to other European countries and vehicle manufacturing licensed by Fiat, more Seat plants were built.
1982 was an important year for Seat: the cooperation with VW began and the second main plant - besides Barcelona - was founded in the small Catalan town of Martorell. Seat now successfully exported to all of Europe and began to design compact and mid-size cars in addition to small cars. VW gradually took over Seat, and today the Catalan-Catalan company is part of the Wolfsburg-based group. Since 2018, Seat has been a holding company, now also focusing on eco-friendly cars and SUVs.
