Tire is slowly losing air

Your tire is slowly losing air

Your car tire is slowly losing air and you don't know why? The cause is often easy to find out yourself. A loss of air from a tire should definitely be investigated, as a flat tire can be dangerous when driving.

How to notice a loss of air from your tire

A new tire loses air: a very unpleasant scenario. Your tire is losing air, but no hole is visible? Don't be fooled! A hole is often not immediately visible from the outside. Especially in cars without tire pressure monitoring sensors on the wheel, air can escape unnoticed and the tire pressure can drop. Air loss is rarely expected, but can occur at any time. Good drivers therefore keep the tire pressure on their vehicle in mind and check the tires regularly and at short intervals for holes and low air pressure.

Often, a tire's loss of air is not detected until it is too late. If you have a tire pressure monitoring system in your car, you will notice the loss of air through a warning light in the cockpit. If you have an older vehicle without this control system, you should check the air pressure every time you refuel. If, while driving, you notice that the car leans in one direction or is difficult to steer, it is usually already too late and you are dealing with a flat tire. In that case, you should leave traffic as soon as possible and take care of the problem But how do you recognize the reason for the air loss?

A tire is losing air? These can be the causes

In addition to external damage such as dents, scratches, cracks or foreign objects (e.g. nails or screws) in the tire, other reasons can also play a role in the loss of air. Other causes could be

  • high age of the tires
  • defective valve (e.g. due to dirt in the valve or wrong insert)
  • rust on the rim, which can cause leaks
  • curbs and potholes
  • low outside temperatures in winter
  • Mounting damage to the tire

As a tire is getting older, the rubber loses its plasticizers. The tire then becomes brittle and porous. This creates cracks through which air can escape.

Tip: Replace tires after 6 years of service life at the latest (regardless of the tire's remaining tread).

Your tire loses air: This is what you should do!

Depending on the damage to the tire, you can use different means to fix the problem. You can find numerous sealants in the hardware store or at your mechanic. In the event of a puncture, these will seal the holes in the tire. Keep in mind that the tire still remains susceptible to new damage.

If the valve is incorrectly seated in the rim opening, press against the valve pin several times with a narrow object. This will allow the blockage to loosen.

It is also recommended that you always carry a foot pump or floor pump in your car, which can be used to re-inflate the tire in an emergency. Pump your tires full until you can steer without problems. Then drive carefully on to the next gas station and pump up the tires completely.

Car tire loses air: these are the consequences you have to expect

When a tire loses air, it becomes floppy and especially the outer surfaces are pressed onto the concrete. This can have serious consequences, such as:

  • increased tire wear
  • higher fuel consumption due to increased rolling resistance
  • the driving behavior deteriorates, steering becomes difficult and the braking distance becomes longer
  • increased risk of skidding

As you can see, a deflated tire is not only a danger for you. In the event of an accident, others will be harmed as well. That's why it's so important to regularly check the pressure of your tires.
