When is it time for new rims?

Just when changing the summer or winter tires, scratches or major damage to the rims become noticeable. The cause of the quirks is wear and tear due to use or scrapes from curbs, for example. For more noticeable damage, the professional should get to work - onto the rim preparation. In professional rim reconditioning, the damaged rims are sanded down and repainted from scratch. In the process, your rim goes through a total of 4 phases.

The 4 steps of rim reconditioning

  1. Disassembly and removal of the tires. Important: Damage to rims can be repaired, damage to tires cannot be.
  2. Cleaning and grinding
  3. Painting
  4. Rims repair

First, the complete wheels must be removed from the vehicle. Then the tires must be removed. After disassembly, the alloy wheels are roughly cleaned and sanded. In this way, rough superficial scratches can be evened out. During the sanding process, the sandpaper grit is gradually increased. The process is completed with the finest grit (e.g. P800) and the rim is then ready for rim painting. The application of the rim lacquer takes about 30 - 40 minutes. The paint must then dry for a further 60 minutes. After that, the tires can be put back on and mounted to your vehicle. Important: In the first few weeks after the rim repair, do not wash in car washes or with pressure washers. The rim paint is only fully cured after about 6 weeks. Since the rim preparation takes a lot of time and tact, rim repairs often cost a lot of money. What does an aluminum rim repair cost?
