The Q5 is an upper mid-range SUV in the Audi product catalogue. It was presented for the first time in 2007, and the first models were delivered during the summer of 2008. In terms of size, the Audi Q5 is positioned in the midfield between the Audi Q7 and Audi Q3. The 8R series was produced from 2008 to 2016 and represented the first generation of the Q5. It was replaced by the FY model series in 2017.

The second generation, internally referred to as FY, has a body about 90 kilograms lighter and stiffer than its predecessor. With the 2020 facelift, Audi brought the Q5 up to date with the latest technology. This allows passengers to traverse through traffic on the "green wave,“ saving time and fuel. For this purpose, the developers have installed newly developed five-link axles and, for the first time, optional air suspension in the current Audi Q5. In terms of technology, the new Audi Q5 remains close to the A4 and continues most of its assistance systems. Although the Q5 is an SUV, it has also been offered as a Sportback variant since 2021.
