The Audi RS4 is the most powerful vehicle that Audi has to offer within the A4 range. This is not surprising, after all, the RS4 is a continuation of the RS2, which at that time was still developed in collaboration with Porsche. This series has been continued since 1999 and its design is always based on the current model of the A4 series, hence the name RS4. With the exception of the Audi A4 B6, there is an RS variant for every model in the A4 range. The series is characterized above all by its higher performance. This can be seen from the production facility, as Audi Sport GmbH - still Quattro GmbH for the first models - is famous for the high top speeds of its vehicles.

The original: The Audi RS4 B5

In 1999, Audi introduced the first RS4, developed on the basis of the A4 B5. Even the first RS4 was able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds despite its kerb weight of 1620 kg. It owed this to its engine with a whopping 381 hp output. The increased power came primarily from modifications to the S4 B5 engine, which also allowed for an eight-speed manual transmission and standard all-wheel drive. The basic philosophy of developing the RS4 as an improvement on the A4 is also evident in other enhancements. For example, some badging was added to the RS4 to indicate its status. In addition, the front bumpers as well as the rear bumpers were enhanced with additional air outlets and honeycomb grilles. The door bumpers were omitted, but the fenders and side sills were widened. Exterior mirror housings, window frame trim and double-flow rear silencers round off the overall appearance. However, there were no body variations on the first RS4; only an estate model was offered. Later models could be purchased as a sedan or convertible if desired. Demand for this vehicle was so high that Audi had to extend the series, initially designed for around 3,000 units, so that 6,030 units eventually saw the light of day.

In the fast lane with the Audi RS4 B7

Although the RS4 B6 was skipped, the RS4 B7 more than makes up for it. Four years after its predecessor, the Audi RS4 B7 puts a whopping 420 horsepower on the road with its V8 + engine. The previously criticized lack of body options has also been addressed here, and the RS4 comes as an Avant, sedan or convertible. With the RS4, demand for the sportier cousin of the Audi A4 B7 reached new heights. 14,368 vehicles were produced from 2005 to 2009, more than double the number of the previous model.
The upgrades compared to the Audi A4 B7 are primarily found in the interior. A flatter steering wheel, stainless steel pedal pads and an engine start button in the center console give the RS4 B7 a sporty interior. But you can also see the car's fast nature from the outside. Widened wheel arches, a modified bumper and oval exhaust tailpipes make it clear that this is a real tomboy.
From 2007, the RS4 B7 was also enhanced with two style packages. The Black and White packages brought new color motifs to the range. As the names suggest, the RS4 B7 could thus also be purchased in Phantom Black or Ibis White. In addition to the color highlights, new 19-inch wheels and glossy exterior mirrors were also introduced. Steering wheel, gearshift and handbrake are covered here with suede, optionally the Audi RS4 B7 could be lowered by 10mm. The car reaches up to 280 km/h, only then the electronic locking system kicks in.

The Audi RS4 B8, third-generation speed

Three years after the second generation was phased out, the third edition of the RS4 followed in 2012 and the Audi RS B8 conquered the market. Once again more powerful than its older brother, the RS4 B8 boasts a 450-horsepower V8 engine and reaches 100 km/h from a standstill in just 4.7 seconds. Wide fenders, updated bumpers and xenon headlights as well as 19-inch rims clearly set the RS4 B8 apart from its A4 variant. But the difference is not only clearly visible on the outside. Inside, it shows up with aluminum pedals and leather sport seats as standard, as well as some lettering that highlights its own name. Unfortunately, the Audi RS4 B8 loses the wealth of variants of its predecessor and is only available as an Avant.

The Audi RS4 B9 - finest craftsmanship from Ingolstadt.

Since 2017, the RS4 series has reached its current peak with the RS4 B9. Based on the A4 B9, this model is also available exclusively as an Avant. Its V6 engine puts 450 hp on the road, reaching 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds. Wider wheel arches, a flatter grille and new skirts, lights and hood give the RS4 B9 an exterior that is clearly distinguishable from the A4.
