In 1972, a new class of vehicle appeared on the scene with the automaker's BMW 5 Series. Vehicles of this series belong to the upper middle class and significantly expanded the range of BMW in the 70s. The current 7th series of the BMW 5 Series has been offered as a G30 sedan and a G31 estate/touring since 2017. The BMW 5 Series competes with the Mercedes E-Class and the Audi A6. A new concept for a new generation: the BMW 5 Series G30/G31
The BMW 5 Series is produced at the BMW plant in Dingolfing. It is also produced at Magna Steyr in Graz. For the Chinese market, the long version BMW G38 based on the sedan is also produced locally in Shenyang.
The BMW G30/G31 model series was completely redesigned: a combination of several changes were made in southern Germany. For example, the BMW 5 Series received completely new axles, but also a new steering system including rear-wheel steering. The suspension was further optimized compared to previous models and overall the total weight was reduced by 100 kg. The models of the BMW G30/G31 series are offered as combustion engines (gasoline and diesel engines) with a system output of:
- 170 hp - 635 hp (top-of-the-range M5 CS)
- 204 hp - 394 hp (plug-in hybrid)
