The BMW 6 Series: Reliable since 1976
The BMW 6 Series is a coupe or convertible in the upper mid-range class segment. The first generation, known internally as the E24, was only available as a two-door coupe and was produced until 1989. A long break followed, and it was not until 14 years later that the second generation of the BMW 6 Series was produced, internally designated E63 for the Coupe and E64 for the Convertible. Just like the first generation, this model was based on the BMW 5 Series. The E63/E64 model series was produced until 2010. The third generation of the BMW 6 Series was available from 2011 to 2019. With the F12/F13 model series, a four-door Gran Coupe (F06) was now added to expand the model range.
The model of the future: the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo
In 2017, BMW then introduced the 6 Series Gran Turismo. The luxury saloon car replaced the BMW 5 Series GT and replaced the F12/F13 model range from 2019. The fourth-generation BMW 6 Series is designated as G32 and is a hatchback with a particularly large tailgate.
Unlike its predecessors, however, the design focus of the G32 is on comfort and space, so that the model clearly stands out from its predecessors. Technically, the Gran Turismo is based on the BMW 5 Series and BMW 7 Series and uses the BMW CLAR platform. The BMW 6 Series GT is produced at the Dingolfing plant in Bavaria.
How the BMW 6 Series sets itself apart
Many see the 6 Series GT as the successor to the BMW 5 Series GT, but the Gran Turismo carries an even greater legacy. While the body is reminiscent of the BMW 5 Series in terms of shape, the BMW 6 Series is much closer to the BMW 7 Series in terms of equipment. Some of the equipment features are already familiar from the luxury class vehicle, for example the fully electrically adjustable comfort seats in the rear. In contrast to these optional features, however, the same features are standard in the 6 Series.
The generous amount of space, choice of engines and long-distance qualities make the BMW 6 Series GT an underdog in the premium segment. It offers more space than its predecessors, does not afford itself any weaknesses in terms of material selection and build quality and, with its large payload and variability in the interior, is perfectly suited as a family car. In addition to the Coupe variant, the BWM 6 Series Convertible combines the freedom of a convertible with the technological advantages of the newest generation.
Despite all these points, it is comparatively rare to see an MBW 6 Series on German roads. The reasons for this probably lie in the time at which it was launched. The years 2018 to 2021 were difficult for many car manufacturers. Nevertheless, the 6 Series GT remains a technically and visually appealing model that comes with more than meets the eye.
